Would it be possible to measure the effects of crystal therapy at work with proper, scientific equipment?
The recent craze in so-called 'crystal therapy' has me bothered...I just want to know if you could pick up 'vibrations' or 'waves' with something akin to a ammeter or other electric measuring device.
"Recent"? That one has been around for thirty years that I know of.
If these crystals really did emit actual electromagnetic waves, you would be able to build a detector for them as you could for scientifically recognized electromagnetic waves and show their existence. The "vibrations" alleged to be emitted from these crystals have different properties and would probably require a different detector.
If you happen to have a volunteer who claims to be sensitive to these vibrations, you can set up an experiment in which you have two crystals of identical sensory qualities but one of which supposedly has the properties being tested and the other does not. You then differentiate these crystals by a mark in some way that would not affect the supposed properties under test. The mark doesn't have to be affixed to the object itself; it can be affixed to the container or mount instead. Which crystal is the active one you keep secret from your detector subjects and any assistants who will be administering the test. You yourself and everyone else who knows which crystal is active must be absent from the room during the test at least until the results are irrevocably recorded. (No fair allowing the subjects to change their minds after the answers are known!)
The "double blind" nature of this test - both subjects and observers/administrators with which the subjects can interact ignorant of a priori knowledge of which is the active crystal - is a key part of the control of a test involving human subjects. Failure to observe this step will greatly weaken the credibility of the test.
Before you can get true believers to accept the results of your tests, You must need to verify independently of your test subjects to the satisfaction of believers which crystal is active and which is not. I don't know how you would do that. If you can enough "sensitive" volunteers, especially those that others agree are sensitive, you may be able to run this test on several subjects - one set of sensitives as verification that one and only one of the crystals is active and again with the full controls in place and preferably with other volunteers with the crystals' identifying marks changed and with subjects who have not had an opportunity to examine the crystals closely.
