What should I do to become a teacher in California?
I have a BA from Cal State school, but in Criminal Justice. Not sure this is the route I want to take over and I always had an interest in education. What steps should I take? If it helps, I want to teach mathematics.
I'm in CA, but you will very likely to return to school get your teaching certificate. You must fill "in the field" experiences (classroom observations, student training, etc.) under of the requirements for a teaching certificate, and successful completion of State for examination. Depending on the courses you took in college, you might be able to complete the degree in teaching about 2 years. One suggestion I have is to see if you can work in schools with your Diploma course before making a decision. Some school districts will allow you to substitute teach, be a teacher aid, or even work for a program after school with a bachelor's degree. That way, if you decide to get your teaching degree, you may be able to use these hours for the certificate. Or, if you decide not to do the degree, then you would not have thousands of dollars spent on another item that you do not want. Hope this helps.
