Guitar finger pain - how to deal with this?
Learning the (steel string) guitar/practicing -- I've been at it for months but I put put down the guitar for about a month and now it's like I'm about back to where I started as far a forming callouses. Before when I had more callouses - they formed scab-like too (on the tips of the 3 middle finger of my left hand) - a little disturbing. I don't have dainty hands and my hands have always been typically strong.
I have one of those finger-punishing grip exercisers (with plastic "guitar string" inserts) - probably should just keep working out on that?
The other guys were a little undiplomatic about it, but they are basically correct. The finger thingie won't help develop callouses. That can only be done by pain LOL. The thing is not to push it too much. To reform them will take a couple of weeks. Until you get them better, play for hour one day, rest one day, play an hour, rest one day, play longer, rest,play longer etc...by about a week and a half you should have developed enough callous to get you going again.
Sometimes I'd rest up too long before a gig, cause I was just tired of playing for awhile and my fingers would get a little soft and I would have to play so long I'd get blisters on all my fingertips. Then you pop em after you're done and the callous comes right back after a day or two.
Now that I've retired from stage performing, I get in a non playing mode and have to do what I just told you to do, reform by slow increases in practice time and letting the nerve ends in the fingertips a rest before punishing them again.
You might even try a lighter gauge string for a while and make sure the action on your guitar is low enough. I used to have a Fender acoustic guitar that hurt my fingers to play even when I was fully calloused and was gigging 3 or 4 night a week.
