who agrees that there should be an extra, heavy tax on SUV's?
Please there is no need for an SUV in suburbia or urban areas--they are just ways of trying to show that you have "money" and are a sheep!
Maybe the tax benefits of the hybrids and highly fuel efficient cars could be restored first. I have to agree that in a free country we all have the right to buy whatever we want, and shouldn't be penalized for our choices. However, SUV's are inherently dangerous because of their height above the road which makes them less stable in an evasive maneuver than a station wagon with the same interior volume. These 4x4-station-wagon-trucks were once great for their image of rugged individuality and the visiblilty they offered above traffic until the roads became clogged with them. Fuel consumption may be somewhat less because of greater weight and poor aerodynamics, but mostly these vehicles have unfairly become the poster child of our gluttonous waste of natural resources and energy hogging life whereby the average US citizen consumes 5 times the amount of anyone else in the world, though this is quickly changing as China, S. America, and Africa continue to develop which will absolutely affect the cost and availablilty of petroleum-based fuels. Projections of oil reserves range, but will probably last about 50 years, since the world is nearing or has already passed Peak Oil. As operating costs climb, consumers will continue to make more energy-efficient choices, also new technology will become available, such as fuel cells, but the SUV's will probably continue to be around for as long as there's a need for ostentatious tow vehicles, just as there will be a need for similarly wasteful and ostentatious high-performance sports cars (which I personally prefer to driving a lumbering tank).
