What exercise can a child do to improve hand strength?
For a child that doesn't have hand strength to color, or write, what would be a good exercise for them to do?
This is for Pre-K 3-5 year old age group.
Spread out one sheet of a newspaper. Tell the child to make a ball out of it. Repeat. Wash their hands afterwards.
Shop for a Nurf or softer foam or rubber balls of different sizes and firmnesses. Have the child squeeze them for 15 seconds, rest then repeat. Play catch too.
Play with sand or silly putty or cookie dough! Make things together.
Pinch grip: Arms at sides. Hold a small book for 15 seconds. Rest, repeat. Put a pillow under so if the book slips from the child's hand, it isn't damaged.
Find a ball about the size of a hard ball. Drill a hole through it and run a short rope through it. Hang a weight. Have the child pick it up and hold it. Don't let the child hold the weight over their feet!
(Is that too hard core?)
Some principles:
1. Squeezing larger objects is more effective than small objects.
2. Do the exercises 3-5 times a week.
3. Start with easy to-do exercises. Progressively increase the difficultly for improvement.
4. The greater the range of movement of the exercise, the more effective it is.
5. Be sure the thumb is being exercised too.
If you don't see an improvement in a month, you might have a medical issue.
