Double Pole

what is the differnce between a breaker with 2 toggles and one with one toggle. Both are double pole 50 amp ..?

I am hooking up an electric range.

The pin is essential to making a double break if either leg is overloaded.

Most 220 (double) breakers must sense a balanced load. You can never split a 220 circuit into 2 110's and use a double breaker. A double breaker, one toggle or two, pulls off both legs as the legs alternate in the panel box, anticipating a true 220 v load (i.e. line to line) that is why the load must be balanced and hence also the pin on the cheaper 2 toggle style ones.

The better ones are sensitive enough to sense an unbalanced load even if it is not an overload, and will still break
