Cable Column
I got a 1984 Monte Carlo my car as it drives jumps out of drive into neutral?
I took off the dash board around the steering column and the cable is connected with a clamp on one side and the other end of the cable is not connected to anything
This most likely means your transmission needs rebuilt. I would either take your car to a shop and have it checked or simply take the transmission pan off and do a transmission service. While the pan is off check inside the bottom of the pan for debris. A little is normal as it results from clutch material used up as the vehicle is driven. However if there is a lot, say a pile or piles of material in the bottom of the pan then you are probably looking at a rebuild. Even if the inside of the pan is clean you could still have a problem. You are probably looking at spending around 1500.00 for a rebuilt transmission with a 6 or 12 month unlimited mileage warranty. Good luck with your car.
